Dr. Mareike Schomerus

Dr. Mareike Schomerus

Topic:  "I am used to many soldiers." Military intervention and attitudes to peace-making in South Sudan
What are the parameters of World Peace? Legacies of violence are a stumbling block on the road to non-violent societies. One such legacy is having experienced military intervention. For civilians in southwestern South Sudan, military intervention through the presence of foreign armies has been part of life for the past ten years. The military presence has at times been both reassuring and threatening—yet how it influenced civilians' choices towards violent or peaceful behaviour is unclear. Does exposure to military intervention change how people think about violence? Do military interventions contribute to a belief that an improvement of the conflict situation will come only through force? Does that mean that a history of military intervention makes future violence more likely? This lecture will also touch upon the findings of the Global Peace Index for 2017. Is "world peace" just a dream of mankind which has prevailed throughout the ages and where does it begin?
