200 Year Anniversary Lecture Series „The Bremen Town Musicians in the Light of Culture, Science and World Peace”

"The Forgotten half of the Brain – Enlightening Discoveries about the Microbiome and the Brain – an interesting parallel to the Bremen Town Musicians"

Guest speaker: Dr. Michael Bogdan Mărgineanu, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia.

Michael Bogdan Mărgineanu

Dr. Michael Bogdan Mărgineanu will discuss examples from brain physiology and the microbiota which highlight principles of cooperation and coordination at the level of cells and the organism. One example will focus on the so-called „forgotten half of the brain” – the glia cells which enable proper development and functioning of the brain.  Another example will examine molecular principles guiding communities of bacteria that constitute part of the microbiota, in relation to each other and to the host. Dr. Mărgineanu is at the crest of the newest wave in scientific research in microbiology. Which principles are of relevance to greater knowledge about the human genome for each and every one of us? How do certain basic underlying concepts relate to the famous story of the Bremen Town Musicians? The answer is very enlightening!

Dr. Michael Bogdan Mărgineanu has completed his PhD studies in Molecular Biology in the group of Prof. Pierre Magistretti at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. He holds a BS degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Jacobs University Bremen. Dr. Mărgineanu has been previously a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, UK, and APC Microbiome Ireland, and in 2018 was nominated as a young scientist to attend the 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting dedicated to Medicine and Physiology.  He is currently based at the Centre for Gene and Cellular Therapies OncoGen in Timișoara, Romania, where he conducts research in allergology.

About the 200 Year Anniversary Lecture Series:
The anniversary lectures in Bremen under the title "The Bremen Town Musicians in the Light of Culture, Science and World Peace" by Cynthia Nieland was created within the framework of the Summer of Town Musicians organized by the Department of Economic Development of Bremen. Within 200 years or more this story has spread all over the world and has made Bremen famous. The story of the Bremen Town Musicians has now emerged as an enlightening target for a wide spectrum of creative and scientific debates. "The Bremen Town Musicians in the Light of Culture, Science and World Peace" looks at the story from a historical, socio-cultural and scientific perspective. For the first time in history from March to September, renowned international scientists and artists are presenting their perspectives on the world-famous story.
