Hendrik Birus comes to Jacobs University Bremen from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, where he founded the Institute for "Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft" in 1988. After serving as Vice Dean of the "Philosophische Fakultät für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft" he was appointed and served as dean from 1991 to 1993. He was visiting professor at the Universities of Vienna, Rome, Illinois, Indiana and Washington, and Yale University. In 2001 he became a fellow of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Bavarian Academy of Science).
