Between March 12 and 18, seventeen young Social Scientists from thirteen countries are coming to Bremen to devote themselves to current questions in Life Course Research. Methodological, theoretical and empirical considerations will be at the center of a Winter School organized by the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) and the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research – LIVES.
The two workshops, each being headed by three to four experts, are on „Social networks, social participation and life transitions: a life course perspective“ and on the question„How do values and political orientations develop across the life-span?“
Workshop 1, led by Eric Widmer (University of Geneve), Karin Wall and Rita Gouveia (both University of Lisbon), examines the interactions between life transitions, changes of personal networks and participation in society using longitudinal data analysis of the LIVES-program as well as other international data sets.
A second workshop about the development of moral values with Klaus Boehnke und Regina Arant (both Jacobs University / BIGSSS) and Maria Pavlova (University of Vechta) investigates the popular notion that political and individual moral values have a ‚classical‘ biographical form of development. Is it true for example that people become increasingly conservative as they get older? How does political activism effect the psychosocial well-being in later life? At the center of this workshop lies the analysis and evaluation of a longitudinal data set that was made available just for the event.
A special feature of the BIGSSS/LIVES Winter School is, that all discussions and data analysis of both workshops should serve as preparatory works for publishing one (or more) scientific paper/s. During the workshops and with the help of the experts, first drafts should be sketched. Finalizations of the paper will be handled by participants in the weeks after the event.
