Design Thinking: Jacobs University Launches Executive Education Program in China and Bremen

January 24, 2019

Together with the mulan Innovation Lab, Jacob University Bremen offers China's first academically certified innovation coaching program for postgraduates. The program called THE INNOVATION COACH familiarizes participants with the methods of design thinking. It will be conducted in three modules in Shanghai and Bremen and will be led by Dr. Christoph Lattemann, Professor of Business Administration and Information Management, and Hagen Böttcher, Head of Business Solutions, on behalf of Jacobs University.

Design Thinking is a way of creatively generating ideas that is strongly oriented towards the needs of users. The method relies on interdisciplinary teams to find user-centric solutions to complex problems and to drive innovation, especially in companies. Their application is a focus of Prof. Dr. Christoph Lattemann, founder of the Desing Thinking Lab at Jacobs University and director of the Jacobs Center for the Study of China and Globalization.

"In view of the rapidly increasing demand for innovation managers, business model managers and experts for digital transformation in China, this training comes at the right time to close the talent gap and enable companies to innovate," says Elena Andolin Mueller, co-program manager and founder of the mulan Innovation Lab, a German-Chinese consulting firm based in Shanghai and Berlin.

After successfully completing the program, which met with great response in China, the participants are expected to be able to coach teams themselves to develop innovative products, services or business models according to the "Train the Trainer" principle. After stations in Shanghai, a five-day workshop at Jacobs University in June 2019 will conclude the training. "Training their employees in Western management methods is an important topic for many Chinese companies," says Hagen Böttcher. "The program once again demonstrates the attractiveness of our international, interdisciplinary learning environment and at the same time strengthens our ties to the important Chinese growth market.”
